Russia's foreign minister comments on EU's embargo on Uzbekistan
RBC, 06.10.2005, Moscow 17:47:04.When asked to comment on the EU sanctions on arms deliveries to Uzbekistan, Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has stated that the European Union had imposed sanctions on Uzbekistan in the sphere not covered by the EU-Uzbekistani relations. He also added that problems between countries had to be settled through negotiations and not sanctions. The EU imposed embargo on armament supplies to Uzbekistan and froze cooperation with the country in a number of directions after Tashkent authorities did not let the international commission into the country to investigate the recent events in Andijan. In addition to the embargo, the EU prohibited entry to European countries to a number of Uzbekistani officials who are held to be responsible for extensive use of weapons during the riot in Andijan.
